iglidur materials for additive manufacturing compared to PLA, ABS and other materials and manufacturing processes
For gears and racks, rollers, lead screw nuts, sliding plates and plain bearings. Configure and download or get it printed by the 3D printing service. No previous knowledge of CAD and no registration required.
The Berlin-based company Blackcam develops compact solutions for remote-controlled camera dollies that travel over narrow rails almost invisible to viewers during live broadcasts of concerts and sporting events. On the way to a trade show, where a prototype was to be presented, the engineer discovered a defective plain bearing, which made the use of the system impossible. Thanks to the 3D printing service, the spare part was produced and delivered within a few hours. This express service was possible with the FDM process and the in-house filament iglidur l180 - a particularly abrasion-resistant high-performance plastic that is ideally suited for camera guidance systems and other industrial applications.
The variety of innovative solutions using 3D printing does not even stop at the music industry: for example, igus 3D printing was used to create new side hammers for a grand piano of the company Phoenix Pianos. The basic design of the grand piano has remained virtually unchanged since 1876, but the high humidity and the rising temperature during playing caused problems for the hammers, which were previously made of wood. Thanks to the 3D printing of the plastic parts, the required quantity of elements made of the appropriate plastic could be delivered very quickly. By changing from wood to plastic, the susceptibility to moisture and temperature was significantly reduced. Pianists who have already played on the modernised grand piano were enthusiastic about the quality: more power could be generated with less effort and the bond with the piano could be increased considerably.
Easelink, a company from Graz, has developed "Matrix Charging", a charging system consisting of two components. A charging pad connected to the mains is installed in the car park. A connector on the bottom of the e-car drops down when parked over the pad. The charging process starts automatically, without the driver having to connect a cable. Use the igus® 3D printing service to make sure the development of prototypes remains cost-effective while ensuring high quality.
"The first thing we did was to have a specimen copy of the lead screw with shaft end support made by Mr. Krause, head of additive manufacturing at igus. The 3D-printed component convinced us in terms of quality, stability, strength, dimensional accuracy and the running characteristics between shaft end support and lead screw. After revising and improving the concept, we ordered all components of "shaft end support - lead screw" using the 3D printing service. "

Project: Automatic cup tray adjustment for fully automatic coffee machines
The plain bearings made of the proven iglidur materials, which are supplied from the igus 3D printing service, allow us to design completely new solutions for various applications in our cutting and winding machines due to the individual geometrical designs. The printed components are now also used in batch-produced components. New developments can also be quickly implemented and tested thanks to the test samples that are usually provided at very short notice. "

Inspired by Formula 1, the student teams of the "Formula Student Germany" construction competition compete with each other. For constructing their racing cars, the Formula Student Team from Weingarten near Ravensburg needed customised plastic pinions, among other things. Using the igus 3D printing service, these components were not only produced quickly, but also made of wear-resistant iglidur material.
Simply drag & drop 1 to 10 files or select from a folder. The files can be uploaded immediately via the upload window or within the tool interface. For the upload, the CAD model must first be exported as a step / . stp file.
The tool immediately displays the price and delivery time for the required part. Unit prices and quantity discounts are also displayed immediately.
If the required component is to be used in a special environment such as food contact, high temperatures, particularly high mechanical stress etc., the appropriate iglidur material can be determined via the filter function. Extensive information and material data are available for all materials and manufacturing processes. A comparison is worthwhile: if several materials meet the same requirements, the manufacturing process can have a positive effect on the price in relation to quantity.
The 3D model is checked for manufacturability in 3D printing with regard to wall thickness analysis and size of installation space. If a part is to be manufactured using the print2mold process (injection moulding with additive moulds), the tool also checks for too thin walls and the design for undercuts, as these are not feasible in print2mold. Contact us if you need injection-moulded parts with undercuts.
The colouring of components in black can be selected directly in the tool. The price and delivery time will be adjusted automatically. If the parts are to be smoothed, there is a choice between chemical smoothing and vibratory grinding. Smoothing using the vibratory finishing process can be booked online immediately, whereas chemical smoothing can be requested via the 3D printing service tool.
The finished configuration can immediately be placed in the shopping cart and ordered. It is also possible to submit an enquiry to the shopping cart, so that a quotation is generated and sent by e-mail. If the configuration is to be sent to other persons for checking or approval, a link can be generated in the shopping cart for this purpose and forwarded.
1. Prepare 3D CAD file
First design the required component as a 3D CAD model and export it in the STP/STEP format. If you already have the 3D model available as an STL file, this must also be converted into an STP/STEP file for the iglidur Designer. If you do not have a license for CAD software, you can find a variety of free tools online. During the design process, please note that the minimum wall thickness must not be less than 0.5mm, otherwise the stability of the mould cannot be guaranteed.
2. Upload in the iglidur Designer
Simply drag the file into the iglidur Designer in the browser or upload it from a folder. The iglidur Designer immediately shows you the unit price, the final price (including quantity discount), the delivery time as well as possible limitations in the manufacturability. Depending on the material and number of components to be printed, the price varies depending on the process. For example, the production of a large number of elements (<5000 pieces) is cheaper and faster in print2mold than in the FDM process.
3. Select plastic for 3D printing
Now you can select the appropriate material or manufacturing process. Select from over 60 friction-optimised plastics. In the tool you can select specific requirements to find the right material: select the application temperature, the surface pressure and other parameters such as conductivity or food conformity, for example.
4. Optional: Reworking
If necessary, you can also select whether your workpiece should be reworked. Here you have a choice of two colours and two possible methods of surface finishing. However, please note that colouring and smoothing affect the friction and wear specifications of the components. A rough surface finish of the unmachined parts does not reduce the sliding properties of the printed parts.
5. Orders or enquiries?
Now the completely configured elements can be transferred directly to the shopping cart and ordered. For particularly large quantities and some special plastics, the price is shown "upon request". In this case, we will provide you a price and further advice on your project as soon as possible. You can also save the finished order from the shopping cart and send it to colleagues via a link or complete the order later.
