Robot Cables: Elevate Performance with Unbeatable Torsion Resistance and Flexibility

What is robot cable?

When customers ask about robotic cables, they often mean cables that are designed to be soft yet robust. Robots are not the only application in which these properties might be desirable. One thing these applications always have in common is that they are required to perform 3D movement in space. Torsional moment usually acts on these cables in the application. It is therefore better to speak of twistable cables. In this segment, there is a large product range called the CFROBOT families available from stock, which has been tested for torsion angles of up to +/- 360 degrees per metre. These cables are available in different assemblies, depending on the electrical requirements. Of course, shielded variants are also available, and the assemblies in such variants have a different design.

Shielding and filling material

Robot cable design is vastly different from cable design for linear applications. Our cables normally have a very strong, stable internal structure able to withstand the special conditions in linear chain applications. But a torsion application has completely different arrangements. These cables have a very soft structure to compensate for the torsional movements. The difference is most noticeable in the shielding and the variety of fillers. We have a different shielding concept for robot cables. We use a shield wrap, not shield braiding, because a wrap allows the shielding to adapt to the torsional movements and to open and close. We have also installed many fillers in the cables. They function as shock absorbers, cushioning the torsional movement within the cable.

Robot application

A robot that welds, clinches, screws, or glues thousands of cars every day must be able to work reliably. Its cable must not only allow twisting, but also be abrasion-resistant and bendable around small radii. The movement is considered very challenging. We have done a great deal of research to make the cables with the chain a reliable system for robots. In various tests with large automotive companies, and in specially developed cable testing machines, we gain experience that has refined our product groups to suit them to the most extreme applications. Our customers used to have expensive special constructions manufactured in large quantities. Today, they benefit from the robot catalogue range that we have created.
